Issue: During the devastating flood in early 2011, the Brisbane River broke its bank at several locations. At Karalee the foundation of a Powerline Pylon was severely damaged. Following repairs with boulders, the site needed urgent protection against future flood erosion.

Vetiver bioengineering technology was applied to protect the site against erosion, especially from future occurrences of high velocity water flow/severe flooding. Vetiver System hedgerows were designed and applied to ensure erosion control and protection.

The Result :Through the application of Vetiver hedgerows, the batters were fully stabilised after 2 summer growth periods. The Vetiver served to fortify and reinforce the soil shear strength, which ensured long-term protection, including against several successive floods over the following 4 years.
